Five years ago, if someone had asked you about the Genesis GV80, you might have looked at them confused, asked who Genesis is, or asked them if you meant the new, experimental luxury SUV made by Hyundai’s luxury arm. Today, things are very different. Hyundai/Genesis says that in the last five years, they have sold over 100,446 GV80 models in the U.S.A., squarely putting the likes of BMW, Audi, and Cadillac in their sights.

GV80
The Genesis GV80 may be one of the newer luxury SUVs on the market, but it has quickly become a go-to for a lot of us for a plush, reliable, no-nonsense luxury people mover for less. This is how the GV80 has quietly been taking the luxury SUV market by sensible storm.

Genesis has given the Electrified G80 a little stretch, more juice, and a touch of class for 2026.
The Luxury SUV Market Is Crowded, But Buyers Want More Than Status
The SUV market in the U.S. plays only second fiddle to the pickup truck market; in short, we are in love with them here. While SUVs were originally for hitting the boonies or lugging things about, in recent years, there has been a huge growth in the number of luxury SUVs of all shapes, sizes, flavors, and price points hitting the roads, and most brands have joined the party.
Genesis only fully joined the U.S. market in 2016, so it is certainly one of the newer marques, but with Hyundai’s reported U.S. sales of the GV80 topping 100,446 models (as of August 2025), it is clear they are doing something very right with this luxury SUV.
Why Today’s Luxury SUV Buyers Expect Technology, Comfort & Real Value
While the past SUV market was all about off-road credentials, a bulletproof build, and versatility, that is not their sole purpose anymore. What started as rugged, body-on-frame vehicles has evolved into something a lot more appreciated by the general driver. Modern SUVs, and especially luxury SUVs, offer sedan levels of refinement in a lot more everyday-friendly and versatile package.
The general shift in the use of the SUV from off-road companion to everyday lounger has changed what we want from a luxury SUV. Even a lot of mainstream SUVs can now handle a bit of everything. With so many brands rolling luxury beasts out, it is no longer good enough to just slap a premium badge on the grille and call it a day; today’s market is about detail. Luxury SUVs need to have a smooth ride, enough power to show off, a flashy cabin, the best tech, and, in some, comfortable off-road prowess, not just an imposing character and well-known emblem up front.
How Genesis Entered A Segment Long Dominated By German Brands
With the likes of the BMW X Series, Mercedes-Benz and AMG G-Class, and Porsche SUVs on the prowl, when Genesis spun off from Hyundai as a standalone luxury brand, there was no shortage of skepticism. The segment it aimed to compete in wasn’t just crowded, but fiercely guarded by German brands with decades of engineering pedigree and a lot of driver love. However, Genesis didn’t try to out-German the Germans. Instead, they came to market with a different philosophy: prioritizing top-tier craftsmanship, über refinement, and driver experience over aggressive branding.
As the first Genesis SUV, the GV80 entered the market as a real statement piece. Rather than chasing Nürburgring lap times, Genesis focused on ride composure, interior plushness, and making everything look rather good. The GV80’s platform is highly tuned for comfort, with a suspension setup that absorbs holes in the road without sacrificing control, something a lot of rivals struggle to balance, while concierge services and simplified trim levels mean you aren’t buried in hefty optional charges.
“Our family got lucky recently traded in our new Lexus GX for a Genesis GV80, and we couldn’t be happier. This is by far the best vehicle we’ve ever owned. The style, both inside and out, is stunning, and the ride is as luxurious and comfortable as all the reviews say.”

Genesis GV80 Design Proves Luxury Doesn’t Need To Be Loud
There is no denying that the 2026 Genesis GV80 mid-sized luxury SUV is bold; there is no getting around that, but it delivers the boldness in a far more refined way than most of its luxury rivals. Yes, it has a large, imposing grille, but unlike some of the common designs on the market, Genesis integrates it with a level of detail and refined balance that keeps it from feeling too excessive.
It is all deliberate; its wide stance and clean-looking surfaces give it all a strong road presence, but without the clutter of aggressive creases and add-ons. It looks confident rather than attention-seeking, which, compared to some of its rivals, is a balance that isn’t always struck.
The real selling point for the GV80 is in its design execution. Chrome accents are utilized with restraint, lines flow across the body, and nothing looks overworked. In a segment where bold often means busy, the GV80 is designed to make a statement without screaming about it. It shouts, but it is controlled.
Signature Styling Details That Make The GV80 Instantly Recognizable
Genesis needed to make a statement when they entered the market, but they have done it with discipline. The Crest Grille is the main point; it is undeniably large and catches your eye, but the intricate G-Matrix pattern and tight-fitting front fascia make it look sophisticated, not excessive.
Then you have the signature two-line LED headlights, which create one of the most distinctive signatures in the segment, while the dual-line theme continues throughout, from the front to the rear, subtly tying in the whole design. The GV80 also avoids the over-sculpted look that has become a mainstay in the class; instead, it boasts smooth, flowing surfaces and a strong shoulder line to create presence on the road. Even the trim detail, wheel designs, and hidden exhaust outlets feel more than decorative.
Inside The Cabin: Premium Materials Meet Minimalism
Inside the 2026 GV80, it is just as refined luxury, not flashy. Genesis is ambitious, but they blend a ‘less is more’ approach with high-end touches and purposeful design. The main feature is an available 27-inch curved OLED display that integrates the 14.5-inch infotainment screen and digital driver cluster into one sweeping panel. You get razor-sharp graphics, customizable layouts, and smooth touchscreens, all without it feeling overwhelming.
Nappa leather seating is available with quilted patterns, while real open-pore wood, satin metal trim, and soft-touch surfaces create a very serene place to sit. Ambient lighting is customizable across 64 colors, and highlights parts of the trim without making it look tacky.
The GV80 also gets 22-way power-adjustable front seats that are heated, ventilated, and available with massaging; second-row seats recline, and even the armrests, door panels, and headliner are padded nicely. Climate control comes in the shape of a multi-zone system with air purification, while sound-deadening keeps things quiet in the cabin.
Laminated glass, active noise cancellation, and well-insulated door seals keep wind noise out and give the GV80 a very comfortable interior feel that rivals high-priced European luxury SUVs. Even cupholder placement and storage cubbies are considered, which shows Genesis and the GV80 as proof that luxury isn’t just what you get, but what you experience.

Smooth Performance And Comfort Are The Core Of The GV80
There are eight different trims of this year’s Genesis GV80: the 2.5T RWD, the 2.5T AWD, the 2.5T Select AWD, the 2.5T Advanced AWD, the 2.5T Prestige AWD, the 3.5T Advanced AWD, the 3.5T Prestige AWD, and the 3.5T Prestige Black AWD. Models wearing the AWD badge get all-wheel drive, and there are two engine options available.

All models get an eight-speed automatic transmission with manual-shift mode, which is controlled by sporty-looking paddle shifters, and rear-wheel drive is standard fare. The AWD system utilized for AWD models is the electronic HTRAC rig.
The quickest 0–60 mph times for this year’s GV80 SUV have been clocked in the mid-5-second range, courtesy of the 3.5-liter bi-turbo V6 paired with all-wheel drive, and while that is relatively fast for a luxury SUV that weighs up to 5,338 pounds, that is not as quick as some of its competitors. However, speed is not the main draw for the GV80.
Refinement Matters More Than Raw Speed In This Luxury SUV
You probably wouldn’t be saying that speed doesn’t matter in a luxury SUV if you owned a Porsche Cayenne Turbo GT or Aston Martin DBX707, which can both get to 60 mph in less than 3.5 seconds, but if you are looking for something quick enough to join the highway at the right speeds and get you there comfortably, the GV80 is the way to look.
V engines are renownedly silky, and the GV80’s available twin-turbo V6 offers strong linear torque and easy acceleration without feeling abrupt underfoot, while the standard-fit turbo-four is powerful and perky enough to get the massive GV80 SUV moving nicely. The eight-speed automatic transmission is also refined and fluid, and offers very easy changes both on the highway and in traffic. Power is delivered here with seamless power in mind over racetrack urgency.
Then you have the HTRAC AWD system with Terrain Mode Select. This setup actively balances torque between the front and rear wheels to give you traction and composure over most surfaces. It isn’t really built for heavy off-road duties, but the system gives you seamless torque distribution instead of abrupt grip changes on slippery or uneven surfaces.
Underneath everything, you’ve also got multi-link suspension front and rear, which works with an available Electronically Controlled Suspension with Road Preview. A forward-facing camera scans the road ahead of you and adjusts damping forces in real time before you hit the bumps to soften what you feel in the cabin. It is a predictive damping system, and because the GV80 is not classed as a sporty SUV, you get a composed ride over the stiff ride of some of its AMG and BMW M SUV model rivals.
“There’s not all that much body roll, and it feels as buttoned-down as it looks. The big 22-inch wheels also didn’t compromise the soft ride, which can’t be said of every SUV that rolls on rims that big.”
How The Genesis GV80 Makes Long Drives Effortless
Alongside the smooth engine choices, luxury interior, and the comfort-based rigging, the 2026 GV80 is easy to drive over distance because of the amount of room that is available inside. As standard, five seats are fitted, but you can opt for a third row in most trims, and available space for you and passengers is generous over all three rows. We find that with many mid-sized three-row SUVs, back row space can be a little cramped, but the GV80 differs in its mid-sized class.

The GV80 can also be used as a luxury SUV for weekends away and everyday errands. If you opt for the third row, you get 11.6 cubic feet behind the seats; there is 36.5 cubic feet of storage space behind the second row when the third row is folded down, and with both the rear rows tucked away, you get a maximum of 71.7 cubic feet.

The addition of another coupe luxury SUV from a non-European brand doesn’t make sense, but neither does Genesis’ motivation behind it.
Why The Genesis GV80 Quietly Became A Smart Luxury SUV Choice
With all its standout features and comfort credentials, it may not be a surprise that GV80 SUV sales are surging. That is not where it ends, though; the 2026 Genesis GV80 is also a relatively affordable luxury SUV this year, especially up against some of its German rivals.
Starting prices for this year’s GV80 SUV are $57,700 and stretch up to $83,250 for the top-tier, most well-equipped trim. Prices for the 2026 Genesis GV80 SUV lineup include:
- 2026 Genesis GV80 2.5T RWD. MSRP: $57,700.
- 2026 Genesis GV80 2.5T AWD. MSRP: $59,850.
- 2026 Genesis GV80 2.5T Select AWD. MSRP: $63,750.
- 2026 Genesis GV80 2.5T Advanced AWD. MSRP: $68,600.
- 2026 Genesis GV80 2.5T Prestige AWD. MSRP: $73,500.
- 2026 Genesis GV80 3.5T Advanced AWD. MSRP: $75,950.
- 2026 Genesis GV80 3.5T Prestige AWD. MSRP: $82,330.
- 2026 Genesis GV80 3.5T Prestige Black AWD. MSRP: $83,250.
So, while a $68,300 2026 BMW X5 base trim may offer a sportier, more aggressive look and the BMW badge, the comparably lower prices of the GV80 base trim still offer a huge amount of finery, comfort, and horsepower output for its pricing. Likewise, the new Mercedes GLE base trim (the 350 4MATIC) may have the generational sway of the German marque, but it will cost you just shy of $65,000 to start with, and has fewer ponies to play with (255 horsepower).
Genesis Has Already Built A Strong Reputation In The Luxury SUV Market
While German luxury SUVs can be reliable (think Porsche), they have a tendency to be expensive to maintain. Genesis, on the other hand, is one of the most reliable and innovative Asian brands and has some of the most reasonable maintenance costs for its class.
Being the luxury arm of modern-day Hyundai has its perks, and in the GV80’s case, this perk is high reliability, with an 83 out of 100 reliability rating on J.D. Power. Also, according to CarEdge, five-year maintenance costs are only $3,216. Compared to the likes of the BMW X5, which will cost you just over $6,100 over the same time, it is positively economical. That kind of reputation in a typically expensive segment goes a long way.
With low starting prices, very well-equipped trims, powerful engine choices, oodles of comfort, high reliability ratings, maintenance costs that are generally unheard of in the luxury SUV market, a plush interior, and a build that blends serene composure and a head-turning design, we aren’t surprised that the new kid on the block is making all sorts of trouble for the stalwarts of the luxury SUV segment.
