That V6 symphony is like a song you just want to keep on repeat. I found myself wanting more—I needed to take this car on a proper road trip with my better half, Jessyca Primo. So we set off on a short stint from Johannesburg—South Africa’s largest city—to Middelburg, roughly 105 miles out.

On the open road, this machine devoured miles effortlessly. It felt completely composed—planted, controlled, like it was barely breaking a sweat. Switch it into Race mode, and everything changes. Traction control loosens its grip, the suspension firms up, and the car sharpens into something far more aggressive.

Dynamic brings the fun, sharpening things up without going over the edge. But RACE? That’s where it truly comes alive. These are Alfa Romeo’s DNA drive modes: D for Dynamic, N for Natural, and A for Advanced Efficiency—each one unlocking a different side of the car’s character. And then there’s Race.

I remember a new hybridized BMW M5 pulling up, almost inviting a run. And I’ll admit—I went for it. Both of us surged forward, speeds climbing hard into the 140 mph range, the V6 screaming, pulling relentlessly. But then the M5 kept going. I tapped off and was not going to pull a Fast & Furious over a silly M5—safety first, and also the chap was not stopping at all. The M5 just kept going—pulling harder, faster—eventually stretching its legs and disappearing ahead as speeds climbed even further. I honestly was amazed… and a little shell-shocked.

I backed off, settled into a cruise, let the music play, and soaked in that addictive V6 symphony. But it’s safe to say this isn’t a small feat—the Stelvio QV can sprint from 0–60 mph in around 3.6 seconds and charge all the way to a 176 mph top speed. Arriving at our little stay, the car—and us—were ready for a break. It was a sweet escape: good food, great company, and a machine waiting patiently outside. Still, there’s something deeply addictive about this car. I needed more.

On the drive back, I found myself eager to experience everything again. Having driven the Giulia Quadrifoglio before, the comparison is unavoidable. The Giulia feels raw and slightly unpredictable—exciting, but demanding. The Stelvio feels more planted and reassuring, giving you confidence while still being engaging.

It’s essentially a Giulia Quadrifoglio with added practicality. And that practicality matters. It’s comfortable for long trips, offers generous rear space, and has usable cargo capacity. Fuel economy, however, is not its strong point. I averaged around 14 mpg, but most of that was spirited driving—exactly how this car begs to be driven.

Of course, this character comes with compromises. The interior, while driver-focused, doesn’t match the polish of German rivals. The infotainment system is simple: functional, but not particularly exciting. If you’re expecting cutting-edge tech, you won’t find it here. Material quality is good, but not class-leading. And that’s noticeable. Fuel economy is another consideration. Expect around 17 mpg city and 23 mpg highway, which is typical for the segment but still something to keep in mind. Then there’s reliability as well as depreciation. The Stelvio QV and Giulia QV do not hold their value that well.

However, it’s worth noting that Alfa Romeo has made significant improvements over the years. Still, the perception lingers—especially in the U.S. market. For some buyers, that uncertainty is enough to look elsewhere, and that’s understandable. But for an enthusiast—a true car fanatic—it doesn’t always have to make perfect sense.
